Kamasi Washington – Fists of Fury

Reigning king of jazz creates an epic, kung fu-inspired tribute to black power

Kamasi reinterprets the theme from Bruce Lee’s classic movie, refocusing the titular fury on the quest for freedom and justice. A mix of jazz, funky grooves and soulful vocals, it transforms the kitschy over-eager original to an epic, anthemic piece. From the rallying sax chants at the beginning, through the various solos and vocal passages, the energy doesn’t relent. Kamasi’s sax steals the spotlight, of course, with a solo that rises gradually to a shout for action. At the end, the band lets loose for a rousing jam that will send you off, fists ablaze and ready to save the world!
