FKA twigs quietly dazzles on intimate “Cellophane”
The celestial sorceress of twisted pop is back with a full multimedia creation
In the four years since her first album, FKA twigs was thrust into the spotlights of people-obsessed media for the wrong reasons. Her relationship and breakup with Robert Pattinson made the masses aware of her, though not necessarily of her avant-garde work. To make things harder, she was in constant pain due to tumours in her uterus, which she finally had removed.
Following her operation, she had an uphill battle to recover and produce work again. Not one to go the easy route, she decided to learn pole-dancing, which she has now mastered, as she seems to do with nearly everything she touches.
For her comeback single and the first taste of her upcoming second album, she delivers another brilliant song/video package. The words are deeply personal, about breakup, disappointment and guilt, inspired by her failed love affair. She sings atop a sparse piano backing, with sporadic electronic glitches and rumbling beats, her voice doing acrobatic leaps from a delicate murmur to piercing soprano. The clip showcases her pole-dancing prowess, and concludes with a fantastical metamorphosis.
FKA twigs is truly back and in top form, ready to shake up staid pop once more. We can’t wait for the next hit!
