Texas and Wu-Tang Clan’s “Hi” is two unlikely old friends hooking up for a quick catchup

Sharleen and Kadeem

The underrated pop masters and celebrated rap masters collaborate to deliver a heart-warming chilled dose of nostalgia

No matter how nostalgic you are for your heroes to be back together, don’t follow this dude’s example

Texas were always an anomaly: their name and influences invoked the USA, yet they were from Glasgow; their first–timeless classic!–single’s most memorable sound was that of blues slide guitars and yet it was perfect pop; and they seemed like a one-hit wonder, until they came back and became more like a two-hit wonder, then disappeared again before scoring more hits. Looking back, they are always there even though you tend to forget them.

Back in their glory days, they didn’t seem to share much with the Wu-Tang, except for the fact that both were huge in totally different worlds. Oh and maybe the fact that Wu-Tang’s Chinese name and cultural references belied their Staten Island roots. Yet somehow the two bands met and collaborated on one big hit that most of us have forgotten.

Except for the kid in the new Texas clip, a nostalgic fan of both (played by rising UK TV star Kadeem Ramsay) who is so determined that he somehow makes it happen. You shouldn’t try this yourself though! Texas have always made brilliant, understated videos (like when the gorgeous Sharleen Spiteri impersonated Elvis) and this is no exception.

The song itself is very agreeable but slight. More of a cool get-together than a powerful addition to Texas’ legacy. Yet it is heart-warming to see these unlikely old-timers collaborate, and it did inspire us to dig back into our old playlists. Cheers to that!
