2nd Generation Wu try to recreate glory on “7.O.D.”
The Clan’s progeny try to keep the flame burning without really making it any brighter
The slogan went “Wu Tang Forever!” and the children of the original Clan are taking it literally by attempting to create a dynasty. From the unwieldy, unoriginal and too-damn-explicit band name to the reworking of one of the Wu Tang Clan’s best-known songs, these kids seem content to mooch off an existing legend rather than create their own.
It’s a double-edged sword, since you are competing with masters of the art without bringing anything new to the table. Even the righteous God-praising rewording of the classic chorus seems like a watered-down cop-out.
It has to be said though that it is catchy and fun to listen to; familiarity is the secret ingredient of catchiness after all. The second generation all have decent flow, and one of them actually has something interesting to say besides spitting out trite ego-rubs.
Let’s give these young people the benefit of the doubt that they are still feeling their way to originality and perhaps greatness. Holiday spirit and all that!
