Grimes goes deep, dark in “So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth”
Another swerve from the art-pop alchemist into galactic mythology
Grimes has been teasing her next album for over a year; an ecology-themed epic with hints of nü-metal, apparently. An amazing dark hard-rocking first single last November looks to have been excluded from the final tracklist, and a second future-disco one seems in. This is the third, and its yet another curveball to a new style.
A relaxed mid-tempo but deep and heavy rhythm is the foundation for the track. On top of it, ethereal new-agey melodies float and Grimes repeatedly chants the sparse lyrics. The core idea is that love makes the narrator feel planet-piercingly massive. The overall effect is a sort of cyber-fantasy ambiance. It is complemented by the accompanying visuals depicting a space fight between a dragon and an armoured warrior (Grimes herself?).
Grimes albums are few and far between, and each is an event well worthy of attention. She continues to keep us on our toes, so here’s hoping for a third consecutive masterpiece.
