Royal Trux deliver a hit of potent “White Stuff”
Sleazy, damaged rock ‘n’ roll that makes you wonder how the hell these guys are recording together again, and how on earth can it be this good
For anyone who followed underground legends Royal Trux, the thought of hearing the explosive couple recording together once more seemed absolutely impossible. Jennifer Herrema and Neil Hagerty have spend the past 18 years publicly trashing each other, besides putting out some great music each on their own.
It is no surprise then that they started insulting each other even before the new album was officially out. Hagerty even said that he hadn’t heard more than 10 seconds of it, which he thought was shit.
It is surprising, however, that the record is just the fix we have been waiting for all these years. The swampy, noisy, swaggering riffs still sound like a sleazy version of the blues, or the Rolling Stones. They are familiar, but in no way comfortable.
The band still sound like they are perpetually on the edge of falling apart, yet manage to play tight and with tons of attitude. They obviously know all the codes of rock ‘n’ roll, but make a habit of wilfully ignoring them. By gleefully desecrecating tradition, they are really more authentically rock ‘n’ roll than anyone.
Evolving with the times, they even recruit Hip Hop originator Kool Keith to add groovy vibes on one track
White Stuff is a short but powerful shot of white hot white noize, and we should all be junkies!
