Dave eloquently chronicles complexity of being “Black”

Britain’s most interesting rapper ambitiously tackles the vast subject of blackness… and pulls it off beautifully

Black is not a proud cultural anthem, nor a lament for injustice suffered, nor an angry call for action. It is all of the above, weaved together into a whole that is so much more. It sees Dave skipping expertly from theme to theme, with intelligence and wisdom far beyond his 20 years, using strong imagery and simple yet powerful expression.

“Black” faced a backlash upon its release, accused of dark victimhood. Racist bigots probably couldn’t handle the scary reality of an intelligent young black man; they couldn’t fathom the subtlety of its dark and light message. Let us relish the burn they felt and the fire that burnt them!
