Janelle Monae – Make Me Feel

The spirit of Prince is alive in Janelle’s long-awaited comeback

Janelle’s little Hollywood escapade was cute and all, but that is not where we needed her most. There is a void in rock’s genius pool right now, and she has to jump in to help fill it. She does at long last with style and panache: channeling her hero and mentor, Prince, both musically (the track is a obvious reworking of “Kiss”) and as a formidable performer (check out these hip moves, and those rose-y leggings!) She also winks at David Bowie, and all his New Wave progeny, and carries on his bi-sexual flag. Janelle is a multimedia artist, of course, and the song is inseparable from its clip: it’s a festival of colours, styles, fashions and sensuality. Clear the throne, y’all!
