Nilufer Yanya – Thanks 4 Nothing
The Turkish/English prodigy continues her winning streak with this stinging kiss-off
For two years now Nilufer Yanya has been drip-feeding us with singles, and striking gold with each one. Each new song confirms that the past ones were no flukes, as she draws and defines a sound all her own.
Now 23, the Londoner of Turkish origins has always sounded confident beyond her years. Her style is a sparse, unpolished mix of blues, soul, folk and indie rock. Her lyrics are equally simple and strikingly honest.
It is all on display here, as she decides to break off a relationship, since there’s it’s not worth it to try “to make things better” and she really doesn’t think “we can be friends”. It stings, and as the music hits harder, you can bet the receiving party must have heard it loud and clear.
